Historic Preservation Services

Susan Sheppard has a B.A. in Art History from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a M.A. in History with an Historic Preservation emphasis from Southeast Missouri State University. She has worked professionally in the field of historic preservation since 2003. This has included a diverse background of work with government, non-profits, architecture and engineering firms, neighborhood organizations and in community development. Susan has worked at the Missouri Department of Transportation, Landmarks St. Louis and SCI Engineering. Most recently she worked for 4 years as a Cultural Resource Management Specialist at the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office. She has worked in Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa and South Dakota.

Susan has prepared numerous architectural surveys, Section 106 reviews and National Register of Historic Places nominations on districts and single sites, and has worked with HUD's Neighborhood Stabilization Program. In addition, she has worked on historic tax credit applications, preservation plans, building condition assessments, and HABS/HAER documentations. Susan has additional formal training in Section 106 Review, Mid-Century Modern architectural history, and Form Based Codes. She has a particular interest in grassroots community development, small businesses and historic commercial districts, and has extensive experience working on right-sizing issues in Rust Belt cities and in diverse urban neighborhood.
